FAQ for Free Standing Pergola
1. Will it leak when it rains? Is it waterproof when the louvers are fully closed? When closed, the aluminum louvers interlock with each other, which — together with the EPDM sealing strips between the louvers and the rainwater channels on both sides — achieves a high level of rain protection. The main beam is also designed with a drainage slope, and rainwater flows through the built-in gutter channels down to the posts to be discharged. Note: to ensure smooth drainage, an installation slope of 3°–5° is recommended. In heavy rain it is basically drip-proof, but in extreme weather it is not recommended to keep the louvers fully closed.
2. How wind resistant is it? How much wind can it withstand with the louvers open or closed? With the louvers open, wind passes through freely, giving the best wind performance (industry-typical values can reach 60–80 km/h or more). With the louvers closed, the wind-catching surface is larger and wind resistance decreases (usually limited to 30–50 km/h). When a high-wind warning is issued, the louvers should be opened for ventilation. Exact values depend on the profile cross-section, post wall thickness and the installation/fixing method.
3. Can it bear snow load? Is it suitable for cold regions? Snow load capacity can be increased by choosing reinforced posts and a denser beam layout. Customers in the European market usually require verification against EN standards (e.g. snow load of 0.5–1.0 kN/m² or higher). In snow-prone areas, snow should be cleared from the louvers regularly to avoid local overloading.
4. What materials are the louvers and frame made of? Will they rust or fade? The mainstream configuration is 6063-T5 aluminum alloy profiles with outdoor-grade powder coating (RAL color can be specified). Aluminum itself does not rust, and the powder coating is UV-resistant and not prone to fading, showing no significant aging after more than 10 years of normal outdoor use.
5. Is it motorized? Does it support remote control, APP or smart home control? The standard configuration is a tubular motor with a remote control. Mid-range and high-end configurations support WiFi/APP remote control, and can be equipped with wind, rain and light sensors for automatic opening and closing of the louvers in wind and rain. European customers often ask about smart home system compatibility — this can be highlighted as a separate selling point.
6. How is rainwater drained? Will it leak from the inside of the posts? Rainwater collected by the louvers flows along the gutter channels to pre-installed drainage channels inside the posts (or to external downpipes), so no extra trenching on the ground is needed. The installation must be properly leveled and sloped, otherwise the drainage effect may be affected.
7. Is installation troublesome? Does it require a foundation or professional installation? Freestanding units require a poured concrete foundation or fixing with expansion bolts; wall-mounted units are fixed directly to the wall. Thanks to the modular design, 2–3 workers can usually complete the installation in 1–2 days. Installation drawings or on-site guidance can be provided.
8. What are the typical warranty and service life? The warranty on the frame/profiles is generally 5–10 years, and 2–3 years on the motor. The overall designed service life is 15–20 years. The motor is a wear-and-tear part that can be replaced easily later without dismantling the whole structure.
9. Can the size, color and features be customized? Yes. Sizes can be customized to the on-site dimensions (width, depth and height), colors can be specified by RAL code, and optional features include LED light strips, heaters, side curtains and wind-resistant roller blinds. As an OEM/ODM factory, we can also develop specific specifications according to customer requirements.
10. Does it require maintenance over time? It is basically maintenance-free: routine cleaning of dust and leaves from the louvers, lubricating the moving rail parts once a year, and an annual motor check are all that is needed. In coastal or sandy/dusty areas, more frequent cleaning is recommended to protect the coating.
